New Year, new trends. Now that we are breaking through a new year in terms of graphic design, we wanted to point out some of the more important trends we’ve seen that have emerged during the course of the year; some of them which we believe will be even bigger in 2023. Although modern and futuristic imagery, such as 3D design, got progressively popular throughout the years, we also saw a nostalgic response to those pixels and renders, as Retro-inspired trends were widely in use again. So, let’s look into them in more depth and, if you ask us, let’s see how the 2023 Top Five in Graphic Design looks like.
1. FUN WITH FONTS
We’ll start with one of the most popular trends for 2023, the way we play with fonts. Let’s remember that font’s goals are: legibility, functionality, and an efficient transmission of its message, whichever it might be. It’s important to acknowledge our daily and constant exposure to different types of notifications and messages, so we need something that stands out and captures the attention of whoever sees it. This trends is a breath of fresh air among everything that already exists; it includes fun typographies and non-conventional fonts that can be used in glamorous or minimalists styles, moreover, non-standard or inverted typography, as well as combining different fonts, will be a top trend this coming year.
2. 3D DESIGN
3D Design has been mighty among designers; applications such as 4D and the latest Adobe updates, have made possible for designers to explore new styles and to expand from previously established limits, which results in many and refreshing new projects; it’s noteworthy the interest brands have with collaborating with said designers and animators, which are now becoming the new threshold. An example of this would be the existence of brand coexisting among products identity and design, architecture and even illustrations. If you want to stand out from the rest of the market this coming year, this is your sign!
3. FOIL PRINTING.
One of the biggest graphic design trends for 2023 is foil printing, also known as hot stamping. Even though color gradient has been making a comeback these last couple of years, hot stamping offers a unique form to spice things up with luxury and style to printed material. Brands might even add a touch of class and sophistication to their products with the help of hot stamping. We can already see such applications in labels, stickers and packaging; I’m pretty sure the product that first catches your eyes will have these applications.
4. OUTSTANDING PHOTOGRAPHY
To say photography is an important part of graphic design would be an understatement; it can take the main role or it can be a great complement. It’s important to use images that adjust to the message we are trying to convey. And this is the case in printed material, where photography takes the main stage, as well as in e-commerce websites, where having a high-resolution photograph, with great attention to details, is of great importance. In past times, this often meant using plain and lifeless stock photos. But now, a growing number of designers prefer to create their own images, to take their own pictures, or they are even finding new and creative ways to use pictures that have been intervened. Not only does this apply for photography of products, but people and nature as well, anything and everything required in order to tell a story or evoke an emotion.
5. MINIMALISM
Minimalism is an industrial design style, distinguished by its lines, and its clean and simple shapes. It’s focused on functionality, which is why different ornaments are reduced to its minimum component. Generally speaking, minimalism takes one of two different approaches: either everything reduces to its more essential aspect, or only one dramatic element is used to add visual interest. We can appreciate this as a modern and clean aspect, but it can also be pretty striking, as in a specific color accentuation, for example, as well as the way we play with fonts and the use of photography.
